TaxACT Deluxe Tablet App (for iPad)

TurboTax Deluxe Online?holds a slight edge over TaxACT Deluxe Online when it comes to desktop tax prep because of its ubiquitous, exceptional help content, so TurboTax took the Editor's Choice there. On tablet's however, it's another story. TaxACT Deluxe Tablet App gets the Editors' Choice for tablet-based tax preparation solutions. It's economical, it's thorough, it's accessible in more ways (Android and iPad?), and, by rewriting the help content and retooling the user interface for tablets, it's become the best all-around mobile solution for personal tax preparation and filing.

Getting Around
TaxACT's user interface is rearranged differently for the tablet version, but it's just as effective. Actually, I prefer it, personally. What is there is arranged very neatly and makes navigation fast and thorough. The navigational tabs that run across the top of the screen in the online browser-based version are now in a vertical pane on the left. Most everything is still there, though there's no data entry box for the Answer Center on the main screen. You can move forward or back to visit different topics by clicking on the main tabs (Basic Info, Life Events, Federal Q&A, etc.) and sub-tabs (like Income, Deductions and Credits).

Once you get into the data entry screens, the app looks and works just like its browser-based counterpart. "Back" and "Continue" buttons move you in reverse or forward. TaxACT walks you through all of the tax-related topics that you need to consider for your situation, asking questions and using standard conventions for your answers: data fields, lists, checkboxes, etc.

When you finish a section, TaxACT summarizes your activity there and lets you go back and revisit topics or enter data in any you somehow missed. As you move through the Q&A, the app takes your answers and places them on the correct lines on the 1040 and its forms and schedules. If you don't have the needed information at hand, you can create a "bookmark" that will remind you later. When you've finished, TaxACT analyzes your return for errors and omissions and lets you correct them right on the same screen. If you pay state income tax, the app automatically imports the data you'll need there. And when you're finally finished, you can print or e-file your return.

Numerous Help Resources
There are three links below the navigational markers in the left vertical pane. "Jump To Forms & Topics" does just what it sounds like: It opens a screen with interactive outlines of forms and schedules, documents received, worksheets and TaxACT topics. These provide a good alternative method for zeroing in on the pages you need.

The Help link is directly below that, and it opens a new set of tabs in the left vertical pane that takes you to TaxACT's eclectic collection of help tools. These are:

? Popular Help Topics: Links to context-sensitive instructions for that topic
? Tax Tutor Guidance: TaxACT's own completely-rewritten-from-the-ground-up help files, which are quite understandable and helpful
? Form Instructions: IRS instructional text
? Tax Glossary: Definitions of common words and phrases
? Video Help Topics: Short educational videos on app help
? IRS Publications: Links to more thorough IRS tutoring

The final link here takes you to the Answer Center. This is where you can search the voluminous help resources within the app. Enter a search work or phrase, and TaxACT provides links to four kinds of help: the best answers, answers that others have found useful, related pages within the app and topical glossary terms. This is great.

A Winning Combination
TaxACT Deluxe Tablet App and its competitors have more similarities than differences. They all use a similar step-by-step, wizard-like interview process to elicit information from you. Help is available in many forms from each, with varying degrees of readability, simplicity and comprehensiveness. The tax topics they cover are roughly comparable. They all offer state versions, analyze your return for problems and help you e-file.

TaxACT Deluxe Tablet App, though, is the clear winner of this year's Editor's Choice for tablet-based apps. It's the most inexpensive. Not only did 2nd Story Software translate the existing browser-based application for mobile use, but they made it better. In doing so, they made their help resources more accessible and effective. It may not download financial data from as many sources as TurboTax, but they've added a convention called the "TaxACT Doc Vault." You can take pictures of receipts, invoices, tax forms etc. through the year and store them in this free app for use when tax prep times rolls around.

Finally, the fact that TaxACT Deluxe Tablet App is the only solution that can be accessed on both the iPad and Android tablets, and, unlike TurboTax for iPad, lets you work on the same return on both your mobile device and your PC-based browser, makes its selection as Editors' Choice a no-brainer. There's no reason to consider any other tablet app for the 2012 tax year.

Puppies predict big Oscar winner on 'Late Night'

NBC

Jimmy Fallon prepares the puppies for their Oscar picks.

By Ree Hines, TODAY contributor

Will "Zero Dark Thirty" nab top honors on Sunday night? Does "Lincoln" have the edge? Maybe "Argo" is the clear Oscar contender. Of course with "Django Unchained," Les Miserables," "Life of Pi," and "Silver Linings Playbook" all in the mix for best picture, as well as "Amour" and indie breakout "Beasts of the Southern Wild," it's just so hard to say.

So what should you do before laying down a bet in the office Oscar pool? Turn to the prediction pros, of course -- puppies!

Hot off the heels of their winning Super Bowl pick, Jimmy Fallon's favorite team of fluffy pups returned to "Late Night" Wednesday to make the call.

With nine shiny bowls of dog food to choose from, each tagged with the name of one nominated film, the pooches stormed the stage and ? well, they ate food from the several of the closest bowls in an attempt to fill up fast. Hey, first and foremost, they're dogs.

But fear not, their Kreskin skills kicked in eventually. A couple of furballs zeroed in on one bowl in particular and made it official: "Argo" is destined to win!

Or possibly not. They're only puppies after all.

Which movie do you think will win the Oscar for best picture? Share your thoughts on our Facebook page.

Popular Church Takes Anti-Gun Stance

Taking a firm stand against a newly passed law allowing concealed carry in places of worship.

There was a largely positive response from the congregation. Many told KARK they are proud of their congregation's position.

"We've adopted an official position so it's clear where St. Marks stands," said Senior Pastor Phillip Pointer. "After much discussion and prayer the board of elders has unanimously decided to ban all concealed weapons on our property," he added.

The announcement was met with loud applause. Parishioners like Kalean Geen said she aligns herself with their decision.

"This is a house of God," Green said. "We come here to worship and get our praise on and I just don't think guns are worth it."

Looking around at all the tiny hands that are joined together in prayer, Green said there's just no room for dangerous weapons.

Qristoffer Young is a part of the youth choir for the church.

"I'm fully in support of Pastor Pointer," he said. "Clearly it's not a place for individuals of faith to bear arms."

"Our church will continue to use trained security personnel," said Pastor Pointer.

Young echoed his pastor's position and added that dealing with a situation of life and death should be left to the trained professionals who have a quiet presence in the church.

"In my opinion it's really their job," he said. "To carry out any issues as it relates to firearms that may take place here at the church."

Leaving the policing, to the police, and the praising to the worshippers.

The author of the bill, Senator Bryan King, said they won't be keeping track of every church's decision.

St. Marks will be posting notifications of their policy on all their doors.

Google set to open its own retail stores this year, report says

With its Chrome laptop computers and, more recently, Nexus tablets, many have wondered why Google hasn?t followed Apple, Microsoft and others in opening a chain of retail stores showcasing its products.

According to a 9to5Google report over the weekend, it seems the Mountain View company may actually be gearing up to open some brick-and-mortar locations. Sources described as ?extremely reliable? (so not your usual, plain old ?reliable?, then) told the website the company is ?in the process of building stand-alone retail stores in the US and hopes to have the first flagship Google Stores open for the holidays in major metropolitan areas.?

The company is apparently keen to give consumers the chance to go hands-on with its range of products, especially with the expected launch of Google Glass possibly some time next year.

Executives at the company reportedly feel that with a new product like this, it?s essential consumers have a chance to try it out for themselves to better appreciate its capabilities. 9to5Google compares the situation to when Apple introduced the iPad, with Tim Cook recently telling analysts that the Cupertino company?s retail stores were key to the tablet?s success.

?I don?t think we would have been nearly as successful with iPad if it weren?t for our stores,? Cook said. ?It gives Apple an incredible competitive advantage. Others have found out it?s not so easy to replicate. We?re going to continue to invest like crazy. The average store last year was over 50 million in revenue.?

Chome Zone

As for Google, it?s not totally new to the idea of operating retail stores ? it?s actually been dabbling in the field for some time with a number of store-within-a-store set-ups, beginning with the Chrome Zone that opened inside a PC World store in central London in late 2011. In the US, some Best Buy stores are hosting Chrome Zones too. Staffed by Google-trained employees, the stores enable the company to better communicate information about its products and services while giving consumers an opportunity to get hands-on with its tech offerings.

9to5Google?s report also suggests the company could sell its Google-branded merchandise in the new stores, though the source (the extremely reliable one) hadn?t actually mentioned this possibility.

And imagine ? if the locations were large enough, Google might even be able to squeeze in one of its self-driving cars. While it?s unlikely it would be seen trundling around the shop floor, it could nevertheless be a focal point for visitors to the store, giving employees the chance to explain more about the technology, as well as about other projects and initiatives being undertaken by the company.

Top five memories from 2013 NBA All-Star Weekend

LeBron James came into the weekend with the hype he?s built through the monstrous 60 percent, 30-point tear that he?d been on for nearly seven straight games.

Kevin Durant dropped (another) 30-spot: It was his third straight 30-point All-Star game.

Kobe Bryant made an timely, game-sealing block with the West up 134-126 and under 2:40 seconds to play in the game.

Carmelo Anthony and Dwyane Wade each played a well-rounded game.

What do all of these players have in common?

Despite their All-Star game performances, they didn?t do enough to make this particular list of the top five memories of the 2013 NBA All-Star weekend in Houston, Texas.

One point guard stole the show and shed light on what the future has to offer, while another crafted a masterpiece performance in the All-Star game, reminding everyone that he?s the definition of a true lead guard.

Here are my top five memories from my first NBA All-Star weekend:

Kyrie Irving:??He?s gonna be unbelievable,? said LeBron James. ?He?s already unbelievable in this league right now. What he?s gonna do in the future, it?s gonna be crazy? He belongs here.?

Irving came to All-Star weekend in Houston with an agenda, and his trifecta of performances further exemplified this kid?s ability to step up when he?s in the limelight.

?This weekend was just basically about earning everybody?s respect and getting a chance for people to see me that don?t usually see me,? he said before the All-Star Game. ?This weekend is to show my face to the fans and get everybody acclimated to my face in the league.?

Friday night: Carve up the Team Shaq defense to the tune of 32 points (14-20 FG) while making highlight reel plays and making the atmosphere seem as if he were playing in a high school All-Star game?
