Stamford goes pink to raise awareness in breast cancer fight

STAMFORD -- A stream of pink flowed through downtown Saturday as hundreds of volunteers lined Atlantic Street to raise awareness for breast cancer.

They all wore pink shirts and some went a step further, donning pink pants, hats, bows and headbands. One woman, Karen Sabia, even wore a bright pink wig.

"Beep, beep, beep your horn," Sabia shouted to passing motorists, while holding a sign supporting breast cancer awareness. The Stamford resident was with her friend Lori Longo Legierse, a survivor who will be two years cancer-free in November.

The eighth annual Paint the Town Pink campaign, held by Stamford Hospital's Bennett Cancer Center, kicked off at 10:30 a.m. in Veteran's Park with speeches from Mayor Michael Pavia, WABC-TV's Bill Evans and representatives from the hospital.

"This is my favorite charity," said Evans, a Greenwich resident. "I lost my mother to breast cancer. She was 53 and I was 19. She was a concert pianist. Everybody loved her. I watched cancer cut her in half and kill her."

Back then, Evans said, there wasn't much awareness. If she was diagnosed earlier, he said she would have lived to meet his children. He said he hopes someday there will be a cure.

Helen Pass, co-director of the hospital's breast center, said 40,000 women will die from breast cancer this year, but 3 million will survive. "Don't be afraid to get a mammogram," she said. "We can't treat it if we don't know it's there."

After the ceremony, Frank Mastrone sang the "Star-spangled Banner," and hundreds of survivors and supporters took their positions to form a "Mile of Pink" from the park up to the corner, where Atlantic meets Broad Street.

"We just stand and bring awareness to breast cancer," said organizer Michelle Palazzo. "You'll see people get excited as they drive by."

Carol Ienner, a Stamford resident and volunteer, said she was diagnosed with breast cancer 11 years ago and went for treatment at the Bennett Center. "We just like to raise awareness that you can have it, live through treatment and move on," she said.

A unit of 10 members of the U.S. Army joined the cause, including Lestter Thomas, who held a sign that said, "Real Men Wear Pink."

"This is the second year we're doing this event," said Carla Campbell, commander of the unit, based in New Haven. "She asked us about a month ago, and here we are. It's a community event, and that's what we're about -- supporting the community."

A group of students from Westhill High School stood along the street, holding signs that read, "Honk for a Cure," "Be a Bra -- Support Breast Cancer," "Save the Hooters" and "Don't Let Cancer Steal 2nd Base."

Danielle Waring, a teacher at Westhill High School, said she's a cancer survivor and adviser to the students, who take part in several cancer events throughout the year.

The hospital's Mobile Wellness Center, which provides all-digital mammograms for women where they live and work, was parked in Veteran's Park for the morning. But they were not conducting screenings out of the bus Saturday.

Paula Riccardelli, manager of the Mobile Wellness Program, said the unit is mostly for women without insurance. "Mammograms save lives, so we want to screen women in the community and in corporations," she said.

About 2,400 screenings are performed in the unit each year, and about 1,500 of those patients do not have insurance, Riccardelli said. They diagnose a few patients each year and have "definitely saved lots of lives," she said.

Several events will be taking place around the city in October, in recognition of Breast Cancer Awareness Month, including Girls' Night Out with Giuliana Rancic at the Palace Theatre on Oct. 13 and a fashion show at Saks Fifth Avenue on Oct. 17. Rancic is a TV personality who recently survived a bout with breast cancer.

"Well, we?are?political beings. We live in the world; we live in the world of politics. The inner life isn't separate from that. What is the goal of the creativity one feels ? and wishes to develop and help others to develop? Is it just to make more and more pots or take more and more pictures? Is that what it's all about? I don't think so. I think that as we become more creative, we move toward a concern with social justice and compassion. That's the natural movement. We come, maybe through times of loneliness, toward experiencing the reality of another person. As we create, you might say, we are created. We move toward a deepened awareness of reality. Outwardly, we move toward social justice; inwardly we move toward compassion.

{...}

"Consider words: more and more I have come to understand that words are non-verbal. Try asking yourself where the words are before you speak them. I think we make a mistake in trying to restrict a word into something that we can read about in a dictionary. A word is a being. Writing becomes a more intimate and inspired activity when you see you're writing out of your substance, out of the mystery."

Peugeot's Onyx hybrid supercar may be the belle of the Parisian ball ...

THE PEUGEOT ONYX CONCEPT: UTILISING BOLD 'RAW' MATERIALS FOR EFFICIENCY

Peugeot Supercar Concept developed by talented design enthusiasts
Explores the use of core materials in new applications

A tour-de-force bringing excitement, performance and efficiency together with style
Quasar, Proxima, Oxia, 907 ... Peugeot's supercars have always made the eyes of both children and adults shine. In 2012, the Marque is again creating a dream with the supercar of the 21st century: the Onyx.

Sculpted using materials processed as little as possible, this supercar has been created by enthusiasts who have drawn their inspiration from the world of competition. With its V8 engine in a central rear position, the Onyx propels its admirers into a world of high performance, controlled in all circumstances thanks to intuitive instruments and controls. In addition to its stunning aesthetics, it explores new 'raw' materials, to take efficiency to another level.

A passion for innovation has never ceased to find its expression over the 202 year history of Peugeot, one of the oldest marques in the motor industry. Furthermore, it is the only one to offer a comprehensive range of personal means of transport: bicycles, scooters, cars and light utility vehicles. The Onyx Concept Bike and Onyx Concept Scooter are also expressed with this vision of the future and will preview on Peugeot's stand at the Paris Motor Show, later this month.

"Onyx has the strength of a supercar, with extremely aerodynamic lines. It is made unique by its sculpted, chiselled style and by the innovative materials and structure." Gilles Vidal, Peugeot Style Director

A radical silhouette ... an intense emotion from the first glance.

The sharp bodywork calls out with the striking contrast of its materials and colours. Fashioned by hand by a master craftsman, the wings and doors are pure copper sheet. A polished mirror, this metal does not need to resort to tricks to protect itself. So, its appearance will change over time, gaining a patina. The Onyx is alive! As for the other panels of the bodywork, these are carbon fibre, painted matt black.

Slicing through the air with finesse, the front face unites the vertical grille and full LED lamps, tapered, their surface area reduced to a minimum. The flow then separates; some penetrates into the heart of the vehicle, flowing inside the bodywork and the structure to supply the engine with air. The remainder of the flow spreads, skimming along the sides and the 'double-bubble' roof. Finishing off the Onyx with beauty, the rear lamps adopt a light signature with three claws now characteristic of Peugeot. They also support small spoilers which direct the upper and side flows. These reunite as far as possible from the bodywork to reduce drag. With a Cd of 0.30, the aerodynamic impact of the Onyx is inversely proportional to its visual impact.

A link between experience and the future, the Onyx incorporates the present by paying tribute to the RCZ through its 'double-bubble' roof and aluminium arches. With complete transparency, revealing the carbon fibre structure and the passenger compartment, the windows and roof are made of PMMA (PolyMethyl MethAcrylate). Enclosing the cocoon, they guarantee the occupants' optimum protection due to its ultra-resistant structure.

"The silhouette of the Onyx is sculpted softly, sensuously, but it is also alive and technological. From the first sketches I wanted to create a showcase for technological excellence and craftsmanship by combining elements demonstrating high aerodynamic performance, Black Diamond lamps and copper bodywork panels fashioned by hand." Sandeep Bhambra, Onyx Exterior Stylist

A powerful supercar

The chassis of the car is an innovative component, developed with the expertise of Peugeot Sport and the Group's Research and Development Department. In monolithic carbon, this central structure consists of only 12 parts. It incorporates the front and rear chassis legs, which makes it possible to eliminate the connected plates. The torsional stiffness and weight of the structure is optimised, at barely 100kg.

Bolted onto the carbon fibre shell, the 3.7-litre V8 hybrid HDi FAP engine and the suspension bear all the experience of Peugeot Sport, acquired and confirmed on tracks all over the world. Cooled by ducts which begin at the roof via NACA take-offs, the V8 transmits its 600bhp to the rear wheels via a six-speed sequential gearbox. This power ideally exploits compact proportions: 4.65m long, 2.20m wide, 1.13m high and of only 1100kg. Fitted with tyres specially developed by Michelin, 275/30 at the front and 345/30 at the rear, the 20" wheels see their hub retained on the structure by a double wishbone and an in-board controlled suspension, both at the front and at the rear.

Intelligent, the HYbrid4 technology recovers the kinetic energy which is usually lost during braking. Stored in lithium-ion batteries, this energy is then delivered automatically on acceleration, boosting the power by an additional 80bhp. The management of this function is transparent to the driver, as is that of the engine which has represented a real challenge. In fact, the engine designers had to make suitable for the road, an engine which, in competition, operates in an extreme range.

With less than 2kg per horsepower, the Onyx achieves high performance without altering the purity and elegance of its style. To obtain this result, the Onyx is fitted with a flat carbon fibre floor, which creates a powerful ground effect. So, the aerodynamic components could be limited to a strict minimum, by means of extensions of the carbon fibre structure and the moving spoiler which loads the rear suspension during braking. Braking is provided by four carbon discs, 380mm at the front and 355mm at the rear.

Innovative instruments and controls for a unique experience

The doors, the interface between the bodywork and the passenger compartment, offer easy access thanks to their two-movement kinematics. On opening, the outer copper skin separates from the door inner panel and moves laterally by a few centimetres before pivoting around its axis of rotation.

The passenger compartment is bathed with natural light, from floor to roof. Like the bodywork, it has the minimum amount of material retaining only that necessary to make the components and retain them. The result is an uncluttered passenger compartment, in close proximity to the occupants.

"We sought materials fit for a supercar, then they presented themselves of their own accord by their obvious suitability. Carbon for high performance, copper and glass for tradition, felt and paper, natural and used every day."

Sophie Gazeau, Peugeot Colour & Materials Stylist

Made of felt, compressed and stretched, the passenger compartment is formed as a one-piece pod, with no stitching or joins. It creates a real cocoon around the occupants and fitted into the carbon structure, visible in places, fulfils the functions carried out in the past by several components: soundproofing, floor, upper console, roof, bucket seats.

The occupants become one with a uniform part, which also reduces weight. Their sporting comfort has been incorporated with the insertion of foam, under the felt, in the areas of contact with the body.

Warm and soft, the felt originates from an ancestral tradition. Obtained from boiled wool, with intertwined fibres, this material is fully recyclable and provides excellent thermal insulation. In addition, it improves the quality of the surrounding air by dehumidifying it.

"For the interior, I was inspired by an everyday object, the egg box. With remarkable economy of material, it protects very fragile items. I adapted the concept into an intuitive space, with a minimum of connected parts, to become one with the car." Julien Cueff, Onyx Interior Stylist

On board, the driver finds each control without having to take his eyes off the road. The small steering wheel with felt rim falls naturally into the driver's hands and gives an immediate feeling of agility. On its carbon hub the aluminium controls operate the functions of the Onyx, while paddles control the gearbox.

The dashboard is made of a new type of "wood", Newspaper Wood. It is produced from used newspapers, assembled and compressed to create new 'logs' from which the parts are made. The illusion is perfect, with grains which run across the surface. On closer inspection it reveals the secret with the appearance of printed characters.

The dashboard houses the instrument panel in a head up position. On the instrument panel surround, the engine speed and vehicle speed are indicated by metal parts, appearing or disappearing like the keys of a piano. As for the operation of the hybrid engine, this is indicated by digital screens.

A panel of aluminium toggle switches is installed in the roof, including the engine starting switch. Immediately behind this, a strip displays the images from the rear view cameras: two located in the mirrors, the third, panoramic, in the rear capping.

Also made from Newspaper Wood, the console features a unique fuel indicator, shaped from blown-glass by a master craftsman. This fuel chamber, displays the level of fuel visible against finely chiselled indication marks. Also, diffused in the passenger compartment by its vents, the fragrance reproduces the essence of the materials used. Finally, the console houses the dual-zone air conditioning controls, with an aluminium bar with a milled detail finish.

Onyx, like its accomplished Peugeot Concept predecessors, exudes the skills of the talented engineers and designers, introducing new techniques and innovative materials to produce a stylish design with extreme performance that inspires excitement and desirability, while providing a glimpse of the theme of thinking with the future in mind.

University of Notre Dame entomologists are part of a team of researchers that recently discovered a potentially dangerous new malaria-transmitting mosquito. The as yet unnamed, and previously unreported, mosquito breeds in the western areas of Kenya and has an unknown DNA match to any of the existing malaria-transmitting species.

The Anopheles species of mosquitoes which transmits malaria in Africa is already widely studied by researchers. It prefers to rest indoors during the day and feed on humans during the night. Current malaria control programs, including spraying of insecticides and using insecticide-treated bed nets, are designed with these behaviors in mind.

Although the new species has never been implicated in the transmission of malaria, new discoveries in its biting habits pose a threat because it was found to be active outdoors and prefers to bite people earlier in the evening, soon after sunset, when people are not protected by current malaria control techniques.

Neil Lobo, a Notre Dame research associate professor and Brandy St. Laurent, a former Notre Dame doctoral student, joined forces on the team of researchers that made the discovery. y Frank Collins, Notre Dame's George and Winifred Clark Professor of Biology, Collins was principal investigator of the Malaria Transmission Consortium effort funded by the Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation.

The discovery was announced in a paper whose lead author was Jennifer Stevenson of the London School of Hygiene and Tropical Medicine. "All of the sequencing and analysis was done on campus at Notre Dame," Lobo said.

###

Malaria is the leading cause of death in Kenya where 25 million out of its population of 34 million are at risk.

Lobo and Collins are members of Notre Dame's Eck Institute for Global Health and the Department of Biological Sciences. The Eck Institute for Global Health believes that health is a fundamental human right. It endeavors to promote research, training and service to advance health standards for all people, and especially for people in low and middle-income countries, who are disproportionately impacted by preventable diseases.

Why We Get Motion Sickness [Video]

I'm incredibly jealous of people who can read a book while riding in a car or hang out on a boat in choppy waters or act completely normal on a plane without getting motion sickness. Those bastards. So why is it that the rest of us get motion sickness? It's an eyes and ears thing, apparently. Watch it. [ASAP Science via Geekosystem] More »

Dr. Who Interest?

I've been watching the fifth and sixth season of Dr. Who and have been DYING to play it; however, I want original characters.

I would like to play a Time Lord, but a female version. Not a regeneration of the Doctor but rather another time lord all together. She has a nack to meddle in things, much like the doctor and will have it's own open play line. Each new episode is a new battle!

I would like to see some interest before I start it. I would like some companions, can be any species, alien or human, or even have a fellow time lord with me! :] Sound fun? Reply!

No fix for 'Jesus rifles' deploying to Afghanistan

Army officer, Fort Hood, Texas

The code on an ACOG (Advanced Combat Optical Gunsight) made for the U.S. military by defense contractor Trijicon. The lettering at the end, JN8:12 refers to the Bible passage John 8:12.

By Kari Huus, NBC News

When the so-called "Jesus rifle" came to light?in Jan. 2010, it sparked constitutional and security concerns, and a maelstrom of media coverage. The Pentagon ordered the removal of the secret code referring to Bible passages that the manufacturer had inscribed on the scopes of the standard issue?rifles carried by U.S. soldiers into battle in Iraq and Afghanistan.

Nearly three years later ? despite the military's assertion that is making "good progress" ? the code remains on many rifles deploying to Afghanistan, which some soldiers argue is endangering their lives by reinforcing suspicions that the United States is waging a crusade against Muslims.

"I honestly believe that this is a dangerous situation. It literally could be a matter of life and death for a soldier if he fell into the wrong hands," said an Army officer who spoke to NBC News from Fort Hood, Texas.?"The fact that combatant commanders are not following (rules set by Department of Defense) commanders is very disturbing to me."

The officer, who asked not to be named out of fear of reprisal from commanders, provided a photograph, taken on Tuesday, of the code on an M-4 rifle?assigned to a soldier who is slated to deploy to Afghanistan in coming weeks.

The code stamped into the metal of the soldier?s ACOG (Advanced Combat Optical Gunsight) ends with the model number with "JN8:12." which refers to the New Testament passage, John 8:12, which reads: "Then spake Jesus again unto them, saying, I am the light of the world: he that followeth me shall not walk in darkness, but shall have the light of life."

Other rifle scopes among some 250,000 provided by Michigan-based manufacturer Trijicon were imprinted with codes that point to passages in Matthew, Mark, Luke,?Corinthians and Revelations, ABC News reported when it broke the news in 2010.?

Trijicon,?reportedly had been following this practice for at least two decades, and it was well known to gun enthusiasts.

But these scopes attach to M-4 assault rifles used by U.S. troops, allies and Afghan and Iraqi forces being trained by the U.S. military.

The Military Religious Freedom Foundation, a nonprofit group that aggressively pursues the separation of church and state in defense institutions, first flagged the issue in late 2009 after receiving scores of complaints from active duty military members. ?

"It?s constitutionally noxious," said foundation president Mikey Weinstein. "It's an embarrassment and makes us look exactly like the tenth incarnation of the crusades which launches 8 million new jihadist recruiting videos."

The military first said it was unaware of the biblical code. Then Gen. David Petraeus, formerly the head of U.S. Central Command overseeing U.S. forces in Iraq and Afghanistan, in Jan. 2010?issued a press release saying he was "very concerned" to learn of the biblical markings, which were "contrary to U.S. Central Command guidance."
?
"Our mission is to protect the population we're serving and establish conditions for security, stability, and development, and we strive to do that while remaining sensitive to the cultural and religious norms of the populace we are supporting," he said.

In Jan 2010, Trijicon which had a multi-year Defense Department contract to provide up to 800,000 sights, announced it would stop printing the verses on new scopes for the military use and provide modification kits for the removal of the code on existing scopes.

The Department of Defense said it would modify the scopes, starting with those on bases, though in March said it might take as long as a year.

Not all observers thought removal of the unobtrusive lettering on the scopes was a matter of great urgency.

"I understand that we have already started to address this issue," said retired Lt. Col. Robert Maginnis, in a debate with Weinstein on ABC News in March 2010. "You may argue it?s not fast enough," but he said he saw "no evidence" that the code presented a security issue.

Fast forward two and a half years, and "Jesus rifles" are still widely used in the United States and in areas of conflict, according to the Fort Hood?officer, who was deployed to Iraq in 2010-2011. He says he has never seen a fixit kit.

Weinstein of MRFF said he has received more than 2,800 complaints from troops about the Jesus rifles ? now even more widely known to Afghans and Iraqis, in part because of the controversy.

Iraqis "absolutely" know that it?s a Jesus rifle, said the Fort Hood officer, based on his experience.

"Do all the Afghans and Taliban know about this? Probably not. But the ones who do could ultimately affect the life of a soldier," said the? officer. "There?s absolutely no reason this couldn?t have been done in the first six weeks. And that just leads me to wonder why is the Army leadership not taking ownership of the responsibility of completing this task?"

Contacted by NBC News, scope-maker Trijicon directed calls to the head of sales and marketing Tom Munson, who relayed the message through his secretary that "he had no interest" in discussing the Jesus rifle.

NBC News queries to the military about the plan to remove the gospel-referencing code were answered in the form of an email?statement saying the "corrective measures the Army took to remove the code were still ongoing."

"We had to take steps to ensure the corrective measures did not impede ongoing operations in theater, but we've got procedures to catch this at multiple points," said the statement provided by Matthew Bourke, in the U.S. Army Media Relations Division. "We're making good progress."

Large 2012 earthquake triggered temblors worldwide for nearly a week

ScienceDaily (Sep. 26, 2012) ? This year's largest earthquake, a magnitude 8.6 temblor on April 11 centered in the East Indian Ocean off Sumatra, did little damage, but it triggered quakes around the world for at least a week, according to a new analysis by seismologists from the University of California, Berkeley, and the U.S. Geological Survey (USGS).

The April 11 quake was unusually large -- the tenth largest in the last 100 years and, similar to a few other recent large quakes, triggered small quakes during the three hours it took for seismic waves to travel through Earth's crust.

The new study shows, however, that some faults weren't rattled enough by the seismic waves to fail immediately, but were primed to break up to six days later.

The findings are a warning to those living in seismically active regions worldwide that the risk from a large earthquake could persist -- even on the opposite side of the globe -- for more than a few hours, the experts said.

"Until now, we seismologists have always said, 'Don't worry about distant earthquakes triggering local quakes,'" said Roland Burgmann, professor of earth and planetary science at UC Berkeley and coauthor of the study. "This study now says that, while it is very rare -- it may only happen every few decades -- it is a real possibility if the right kind of earthquake happens."

"We found a lot of big events around the world, including a 7.0 quake in Baja California and quakes in Indonesia and Japan, that created significant local shaking," Burgmann added. "If those quakes had been in an urban area, it could potentially have been disastrous."

Burgmann and Fred F. Pollitz, Ross S. Stein and Volkan Sevilgen of the USGS will report their results online on Sept. 26 in advance of publication in the journal Nature.

Burgmann, Pollitz, a research seismologist, and their colleagues also analyzed earthquake occurrences after five other recent temblors larger than 8.5 -- including the deadly 9.2 Sumatra-Andaman quake in 2004 and the 9.0 Tohoku quake that killed thousands in Japan in 2011 -- but saw only a very modest increase in global earthquake activity after these quakes. They said this could be because the East Indian Ocean quake was a "strike-slip" quake that more effectively generates waves, called Love waves, that travel just under the surface and are energetic enough to affect distant fault zones.

Burgmann explained that most large quakes take place at subduction zones, where the ocean bottom sinks below another tectonic plate. This was the origin of the Sumatra-Andaman quake, which produced a record tsunami that took more than 200,000 lives. The 2012 East Indian Ocean quake involved lateral movement -- referred to as strike-slip, the same type of movement that occurs along California's San Andreas Fault -- and was the largest strike-slip quake ever recorded.

"This was one of the weirdest earthquakes we have ever seen," Burgmann said. "It was like the 1906 San Francisco earthquake, a strike-slip event, but it was huge -- 15 times more energetic. This earthquake and an 8.3 that followed were in a very diffuse zone in an oceanic plate close to the Sumatra subduction zone, but it wasn't a single fault that produced the quake, it was a crisscrossing of three or four faults that all ruptured in sequence to make such a big earthquake, and they ruptured deep."

The seismologists analysis found five times the expected number of quakes during the six days following the April 11 quake and aftershock. An unusually low occurrence of quakes during the 6-12 days before that 8.6 quake may have accentuated the impact, possibly because there were many very-close-to-failure faults sensitive to a triggering shock wave, Pollitz said.

One possible mechanism for the delayed action, Burgmann said, is that the East Indian Ocean quake triggered a cascade of smaller, undetectable quakes on these faults that led to larger ruptures later on.

Alternatively, large quakes could trigger nearly undetectable tremors or microquakes that are a sign of slow slip underground.

"One possibility is that the earthquake immediately triggers slow slip in some places, maybe accompanied by detectable tremor, and then that runs away into a bigger earthquake," Burgmann speculated. "Some slow slip events take days to a week or more to evolve."

The work was supported by the USGS.

Trend Micro Titanium Maximum Security 2013

By Neil J. Rubenking

Trend Micro stuffs most of the security suite suite components into their entry-level antivirus product, and adds all the rest in their full-scale security suite. So what's left to distinguish Trend Micro Titanium Maximum Security 2013 ? Quite a lot, as it turns out. This mega-suite incorporates Trend Micro's separately-available password protection and backup/sync products, as well as an additional parental control system that focuses on social networking.

The only visible difference between the main window of Maximum Security and Trend Micro Titanium Internet Security 2013 is the program name in the title bar. Virtually everything else is the same, as most of the added features get installed separately. I'll summarize shared features here. For full details you'll want to read the reviews of Internet Security and of Trend Micro Titanium Antivirus+ 2013 .

Antivirus Protection
Installing Trend Micro on my dozen malware-infested test systems required a lot of help and ancillary cleanup programs from tech support. Trend Micro flagged all of my analysis tools as Trojans simply based on their super-low prevalence; I had to rescue them all from quarantine.

Trend Micro detected 76 percent of the threats, the same as Kaspersky PURE 2.0 Total Security . Norton 360 (2013) and Kaspersky Internet Security (2013) detected 89 percent. Norton scored highest of recent products, with 6.6 points while Trend Micro got 6.1 points. The article How We Test Malware Removal explains how I come up with these scores.

Related Story

Trend Micro detected 97 percent of threats in my malware blocking test and scored 9.3 points. The top scorer in this test was SecureIT Plus with 9.7 points. Tested against my previous malware collection, Webroot SecureAnywhere Complete managed a perfect 10 of 10 possible points. For an explanation of my malware blocking test and its scoring, see How We Test Malware Blocking.

Related Story

Trend Micro doesn't participate in testing with all of the independent labs. Those that do test Trend Micro technology rate it good, not great. The chart below summarizes recent independent lab tests. To learn more about the labs and their tests, see How We Interpret Antivirus Lab Tests.

Good Protection Against Frauds and Spammers
The entry-level antivirus includes effective protection against fraudulent websites that try to steal your login credentials. In testing, its detection rate lagged 16 percentage points behind antiphishing champ Norton, but it beat Internet Explorer alone by 28 points. That's impressive given that the majority of antiphishing solutions I've tested score worse than IE alone. For details on how I find very new phishing sites and calculate these scores, see How We Test Antiphishing.

Related Story

I had to let the Trend Micro antispam test run overnight, as downloading and categorizing email took four times as long as with no spam filter installed. It misfiled just 0.2 percent of valid mail as spam and let less than 11 percent of undeniable spam into the Inbox. That's better than most, though a few suites have proven still more accurate. For a full run-down of my antispam testing technique, see How We Test Antispam.

Related Story

The entry-level antivirus and Internet Security both mark up dangerous links in search results and on social networking pages. They also include a tool to tune your Facebook privacy settings. Trend Micro relies on the built-in Windows Firewall to block incoming threats, simply adding a Firewall Booster for additional firewall protection.

Doctor training to move away from public hospitals, LSU official says ...

BATON ROUGE ? Louisiana?s medical education system will shift some of its residents from the public hospital system to clinics and other community-based health care operations, the head of Louisiana State University?s health-care division said Monday. The move is characterized as part of a trend in both health-care services and medical training but also is aimed at grappling with significant cuts to public hospital programs in recent months, said Dr. Frank Opelka, the university system?s executive vice president for health care and medical education redesign.

Those cuts, the result of a reduction in the federal reimbursement rate for state Medicaid expenditures, are expected to deepen with a plan that Opelka said he will unveil to the LSU system Board of Supervisors next week. ?Once upon a time the overwhelming majority (of medical students) were in the public hospital system, but over the years that has moved with the contraction of patients and beds in the public facilities,? Opelka said.

Opelka outlined the changes Monday in an effort to blunt criticisms made last week by Dr. Fred Cerise, who had been in charge of LSU?s health services and medical education before being removed earlier this summer. Cerise, who was essentially replaced by Opelka, said at a forum hosted by the League of Women Voters of Baton Rouge that he worried there would not be enough patients and resources left at state hospitals to train new doctors.

Opelka said the changes in medical education could cut costs and help those in training become more comfortable with nonhospital settings that are seeing an increase in use, and provide better services.

Opelka said Cerise?s comments ?represent an old-world view about health-care delivery.?

State hospitals were told to cut about $329 million from their budgets this year when the health-care reductions were announced earlier this summer, but officials, led by Cerise, developed a stop-gap plan that used other pots of money to reduce the amount of the cuts to about $50 million. Still, some hospitals, including Lallie Kemp Regional Medical Center in Independence and Walter O. Moss Regional Medical Center in Lake Charles, saw their budgets drastically reduced.

The plans Opelka will present next week are expected to involve deeper cuts to prepare for future reductions.

?We?re still deliberating through those cuts as we?re trying to walk through all the information that we?ve been planning and considering,? he said.

New York City hospitals cracking down on junk food

(AP) ? People nervously waiting around in New York City hospitals for loved ones to come out of surgery can't smoke. In a few months from now, they can't have a supersized fast-food soda. And soon, they won't even be able to get a candy bar out of the vending machine or a piece of fried chicken from the cafeteria.

In one of his latest health campaigns, Mayor Michael Bloomberg is aiming to banish sugary and fatty foods from both public and private hospitals.

In recent years, the city's 15 public hospitals have cut calories in patients' meals and restricted the sale of sugary drinks and unhealthy snacks at vending machines. But now the city is tackling hospital cafeteria food, too. And the Healthy Hospital Food Initiative is expanding its reach: In the past year, 16 private hospitals have signed on.

Earlier this month, the city moved to ban the sale of big sodas and other sugary drinks at fast-food restaurants and theaters, beginning in March. Critics say the hospital initiative is yet another sign that Bloomberg is running a "nanny state," even though the guidelines are voluntary and other cities ? including Boston ? have undertaken similar efforts.

Hospitals say it would be hypocritical of them to serve unhealthy food to patients who are often suffering from obesity and other health problems.

"If there's any place that should not allow smoking or try to make you eat healthy, you would think it'd be the hospitals," Bloomberg said Monday. "We're doing what we should do and you'll see, I think, most of the private hospitals go along with it."

The cafeteria crackdown will ban deep fryers, make leafy green salads a mandatory option and allow only healthy snacks to be stocked near the cafeteria entrance and at cash registers. At least half of all sandwiches and salads must be made or served with whole grains. Half-size sandwich portions must be available for sale.

"People sometimes right now don't have healthy options," said Christine Curtis, the city Health Department's director of nutrition strategy. "So you are there at 2 in the morning and maybe your only choice is soda and chips."

Marcelle Scott brought her own chips and soda into the lobby of Manhattan's privately operated St. Luke's-Roosevelt Hospital ? there was no vending machine in sight ? as she waited for her daughter to give birth Monday. It wasn't the first time the unemployed security guard from the Bronx got the "munchies" for junk food to keep calm while awaiting the outcome of a loved one's medical procedure.

"I like my Snickers and my Mars Bars ? especially if I'm nervous for somebody who's inside," she said.

Most hospitals have already overhauled their vending machines by allowing only two types of 12-ounce high-calorie beverages at each vending machine ? and they must be featured on the lowest rack. Hospital vending machines have also swapped out most baked goods for snacks like granola bars and nuts.

At privately run Montefiore Medical Center, which operates several hospitals in the Bronx, changes have been under way for a couple of years.

"We took ice cream out of the cafeterias and began serving more whole grains," said Dr. Andrew Racine, chief medical officer. "We changed white rice to brown rice."

Herbert Padilla, a retired Manhattan hairdresser, was sitting a few feet from a giant coke machine Monday in an outpatient waiting area at St. Luke's-Roosevelt, where he was undergoing treatment for a nerve disorder. He said that in general, he supports efforts to keep people from overdosing on junk food, but "we shouldn't be forced into this by a hospital."

"The mayor is going too far with this. It's ridiculous," he said. "We're being told what to eat and what to drink. We're not living in a free country anymore."

Apple poaches Google's Sally Cole as Communications Director

Apple is already thought?to be aggressively recruiting Google Maps employees and now it appears Cupertino is after other high-ranked individuals currently?employed?by the search giant. Like Sally Cole, who had up until last month used to be Google?s?Director of Internal Communications for almost six years.

She is now employed in a very similar capacity by Apple. Cole arrives at a time when the growing rivalry between Apple and Google is turning into an all-out war.?Perhaps Cole will reorganize Apple?s PR department which appears to be out of sync lately.

Scuffgate, reports of teething problems with the iPhone 5 and recent cutbacks blamed on the new retail head John Browett all seemingly indicate that Apple is increasingly becoming prone to unusual PR missteps?

9to5Mac spotted the hire via LinkedIn.

According to Cole?s LinkedIn profile, she was hired last month as Apple?s Director of Employee Communications.

Prior to Apple and Google, she worked for Gap Inc. and US EPA.

Cole, a Scarsdale native,?earned her?MBA at Stanford University Graduate School of Business.

By the way, whatever happened to a no-poach agreement between Apple, Google,?Intel and four other technology companies?

Using precisely-targeted lasers, researchers manipulate neurons in worms' brains and take control of their behavior

ScienceDaily (Sep. 23, 2012) ? In the quest to understand how the brain turns sensory input into behavior, Harvard scientists have crossed a major threshold. Using precisely-targeted lasers, researchers have been able to take over an animal's brain, instruct it to turn in any direction they choose, and even to implant false sensory information, fooling the animal into thinking food was nearby.

As described in a September 23 paper published in Nature, a team made up of Sharad Ramanathan, an Assistant Professor of Molecular and Cellular Biology, and of Applied Physics, Askin Kocabas, a Post-Doctoral Fellow in Molecular and Cellular Biology, Ching-Han Shen, a Research Assistant in Molecular and Cellular Biology, and Zengcai V. Guo, from the Howard Hughes Medical Institute were able to take control of Caenorhabditis elegans -- tiny, transparent worms -- by manipulating neurons in the worms' "brain."

The work, Ramanathan said, is important because, by taking control of complex behaviors in a relatively simple animal -- C. elegans have just 302 neurons -we can understand how its nervous system functions..

"If we can understand simple nervous systems to the point of completely controlling them, then it may be a possibility that we can gain a comprehensive understanding of more complex systems," Ramanathan said. "This gives us a framework to think about neural circuits, how to manipulate them, which circuit to manipulate and what activity patterns to produce in them ."

"Extremely important work in the literature has focused on ablating neurons, or studying mutants that affect neuronal function and mapping out the connectivity of the entire nervous system. " he added. "Most of these approaches have discovered neurons necessary for specific behavior by destroying them. The question we were trying to answer was: Instead of breaking the system to understand it, can we essentially hijack the key neurons that are sufficient to control behavior and use these neurons to force the animal to do what we want?"

Before Ramanathan and his team could begin to answer that question, however, they needed to overcome a number of technical challenges.

Using genetic tools, researchers engineered worms whose neurons gave off fluorescent light, allowing them to be tracked during experiments. Researchers also altered genes in the worms which made neurons sensitive to light, meaning they could be activated with pulses of laser light.

The largest challenges, though, came in developing the hardware necessary to track the worms and target the correct neuron in a fraction of a second.

"The goal is to activate only one neuron," he explained. "That's challenging because the animal is moving, and the neurons are densely packed near its head, so the challenge is to acquire an image of the animal, process that image, identify the neuron, track the animal, position your laser and shoot the particularly neuron -- and do it all in 20 milliseconds, or about 50 times a second. The engineering challenges involved seemed insurmountable when we started. But Askin Kocabas found ways to overcome these challenges"

The system researchers eventually developed uses a movable table to keep the crawling worm centered beneath a camera and laser. They also custom-built computer hardware and software, Ramanathan said, to ensure the system works at the split-second speeds they need.

The end result, he said, was a system capable of not only controlling the worms' behavior, but their senses as well. In one test described in the paper, researchers were able to use the system to trick a worm's brain into believing food was nearby, causing it to make a beeline toward the imaginary meal.

Going forward, Ramanathan and his team plan to explore what other behaviors the system can control in C. elegans. Other efforts include designing new cameras and computer hardware with the goal of speeding up the system from 20 milliseconds to one. The increased speed would allow them to test the system in more complex animals, like zebrafish.

"By manipulating the neural system of this animal, we can make it turn left, we can make it turn right, we can make it go in a loop, we can make it think there is food nearby," Ramanathan said. "We want to understand the brain of this animal, which has only a few hundred neurons, completely and essentially turn it into a video game, where we can control all of its behaviors."

Funding for the research was provided by the Human Frontier Science Program, the NIH Pioneer Award and the National Science Foundation.

Proportion, posing part of bodybuilding ... - Body Health & Fitness

Q: I read your column as often as I find time and I wanted to ask a question.

I noticed that you won some bodybuilding titles and trained some male and female champions, but I have not read anything about that in your column. Is there a reason that you don?t write about bodybuilding, fitness or figure competitions?

My wife and I are interested in competing in a bodybuilding and a figure competition and we wanted to know what we would need to do to get prepared for it.

? Michael and Jacqueline

A: The reason that I have not written about bodybuilding or figure competitions is because most of our readers are everyday people looking to lose weight and become lean and healthy, rather than compete in a competition.

With that said, I want you to know that I care about everyone, and I would love to answer your question.

Yes, I had the good fortune and blessing to achieve my lifelong goal of winning the Mr. USA title, along with 18 other titles in bodybuilding. I also was blessed to have trained more than 400 champions in bodybuilding, fitness and figure competitions.

My life has been an incredible journey and one that affords me the opportunity to help others with their the goals from the experiences I have lived and learned from.

So lets talk shop here, brother.

First, to get ready for a competition you must focus on creating a body that is in proportion.

Whether you are competing as a male bodybuilder or, Jacqueline, as a female fitness competitor, you must focus on overall symmetry. You must make sure that all muscle groups are trained properly to afford you a body that looks shapely, fit, defined and balanced.

The judges also will look for a low body-fat level with good definition.

At the same time, you must be able to present it in a favorable way when you pose on stage, as you will be compared to other competitors in a lineup as well as judged on your independent posing routine.

Your workouts and diet must be designed with all of those qualities in mind, and it must be progressive and adjusted as your body changes. A lot of knowledge and work must go into preparing someone for a competition. A clean and healthy diet must be implemented to create a healthier metabolic rate and then utilized to develop a leaner body. Then that diet must be manipulated to have some lower carbohydrate days and some higher carbohydrate days to be able to obtain an extremely low body-fat level that will highlight the muscle definition on the competition stage.

The intensity of each workout must increase so that your muscles are forced to adapt to the added demands by getting harder, stronger and more defined.
